New South Main art space Calliope Gallery to open with “Transmissions: New Works by Amy Hutcheson” on June 24
MEMPHIS, TENN., – Calliope Gallery, a new art venue in the historic South Main Arts District, will open its inaugural art exhibit, “Transmissions: New Works by Amy Hutcheson,” on Saturday, June 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will run through Saturday, August 26, inside the newly renovated space located at 456 Tennessee Street. Gallery hours for this exhibit are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and by appointment by calling Terry Woodard at 901-201-2991.
“My motivation has always been about artists helping other artists,” said Terry Woodard, who owns the gallery space along with her husband, Phil Woodard. “I wanted to start this gallery because we have so many people in our building who are connected and could really support what the artists are doing. We also feel that the space is so unique and is an incredible place to gather. We are hoping to bring more people to the building to garner more exposure for local artists.”
Born in Michigan and now based in Germantown, Hutcheson has shown her abstract artworks in exhibits throughout Memphis as well as in Chicago, Nashville and other cities. “Transmissions” comprises mixed-media works on paper. Most of the works are framed, and some works will be unframed.
“These pieces are kind of about what’s coming in and what’s being put out – space transmissions or signals, waves,” Hutcheson said of the exhibit’s concept. “It’s on that level of how what we put out comes back to us and how it touches everybody. My paintings are as much about what I have left in them as they are about what I have taken away.”
