GERMANTOWN, TENN., July 2, 2018 – Leadership Germantown, a local non-profit organization that works to develop well-informed and effective leaders in our community, has awarded 2018 Promising Leaders Undergraduate Scholarships (PLUS) to Olivia Jones of Houston High School and Allison Willoughby of Briarcrest Christian School.

“This year we received more applications than ever before, and the pool of applicants was nothing less than stellar,” says Laurie Whitney, current Chairman of the Leadership Germantown Board of Directors. “These two remarkable young women rose to the top of the applicant pool by providing exemplary written applications and strong letters of recommendation, and excelling in the interview portion of the selection process.”

To be considered for the PLUS scholarship, applicants must be a graduating senior residing in Germantown who has a demonstrated record of leadership in high school and extracurricular activities and who has maintained an excellent academic record.

Olivia Jones – Houston High School

Acknowledged as a true student leader by her teachers, Jones is intelligent, conscientious, generous, and compassionate.  She is an AP Scholar, and her excellent grades earned her induction into the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, and the National Spanish Honor Society. Jones has been extensively involved with the special needs program at Houston High School for the past three years, including working with the students through the Best Buddies Program as an Executive Board member, and the Horizons Club, where students interact during the school day and help in classrooms. In 2017, Jones was chosen to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy, and she was accepted into the Volunteen Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is also a member of the Houston High varsity cheer team.

Allison Willoughby – Briarcrest Christian School

As one teacher noted, “Ally’s servant spirit is visually evident in all that she does in and outside the classroom.  Her never quit attitude is contagious, and she leads by word and example.”

Willoughby achieved the Congressional Award Gold Certificate – a non-partisan, voluntary and non-competitive United States Congress award, which involves setting goals in four program areas: Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration.  Moreover, Willoughby is an active and effective leader. As the captain of the cheer team and the president of the Wilson Society, she is respected by both her peers and the faculty.  As a student and a leader, she is inquisitive, studious, participatory, thorough, and ethical.
