The Children’s Museum of Memphis Highlights March Programming Aimed at Improving Literacy and Getting Kids Moving

CMOM is celebrating National Reading Month in March with daily storytime and free books on Saturdays. The museum is also hosting a Spring Spectacular to get kids moving and learning during spring break.

MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 8, 2022 – The Children’s Museum of Memphis, a nonprofit organization that focuses on children’s development through exhibits and programs designed to support early learning, is excited to highlight its March programming that aims to get children excited for National Reading Month and get them moving during Spring Break. All month long, CMOM is celebrating National Reading Month with storytime every day. On Saturdays, every child will receive a free book while supplies last. The museum will also host a Spring Spectacular from March 12-27 to get kids moving during spring break. More information can be found at https://cmom.com.

“The Children’s Museum of Memphis is excited to host extensive programming this March that encourages kids to read during National Reading Month while also getting kids moving with our Spring Spectacular on March 12-27,” said Dr. Stewart Burgess, Executive Director of The Children’s Museum of Memphis. “Our programming reflects our priority to provide educational opportunities in a fun way that sets children up for a lifetime of success.”

National Reading Month Activities

National Reading Month focuses on getting children excited about reading and the Children’s Museum of Memphis is joining the fun by offering storytime every Tuesday through Sunday in March from 2:30 – 3:00 p.m. featuring a variety of children’s books. Those interested may see the featured story schedule below and/or all CMOM events on the CMOM website at this link: https://cmom.com/explore/event-calendar/.

“Reading is the foundation of learning, and children with strong literacy and vocabulary skills typically achieve more in school and have a head start to become lifelong learners,” said Burgess. “We want children to discover the joy and love of reading and offer a few different opportunities to help nurture that passion. Children can start that discovery during our daily storytime opportunities and free book giveaways on Saturdays. They can also visit our Book Nook exhibit designed to provide children a comfortable space to read any time they visit the museum.”

Spring Break Activities

With spring break for local school districts quickly approaching, The Children’s Museum of Memphis will have a Spring Spectacular March 12-27 to help children spring out of winter hibernation and celebrate movement reminiscent of spring. The museum’s ballroom will host numerous activities that encourage play and physical activity. To learn more, visit https://cmom.com.

“We want to get children moving this spring break and our Spring Spectacular on March 12-27 will provide them with physical activity they’ll enjoy,” said Burgess. “Physical activity is vital for a child’s overall health and development. Among the many benefits it provides, these activities can help improve their social skills, confidence, and ability to focus.”

The Children’s Museum of Memphis strives to make a positive impact in the community by focusing on improving the development of children through exhibits and programs designed to support early learning. Its core values are to be the intersection of play and hands-on learning, to provide a positive family experience, to be a complement to classroom education, to be inclusive, to provide excellent customer service, to nurture appropriate partnerships in the community, and to follow the best practices of the children’s museum field.

About The Children’s Museum of Memphis

The Children’s Museum of Memphis was founded by three ladies in Memphis who dreamed of a community resource for early childhood learning and development through hands-on exhibits and programs. Memphians Mars Child, Polly Glotzbach, and Harriet McFadden realized their dream as the efforts of five years of hard work paid off when The Children’s Museum of Memphis opened in 1990 in the old National Guard Armory complex.

As a nonprofit organization and an accredited member of the American Alliance of Museums, The Children’s Museum of Memphis continues its mission to inspire children to explore, imagine, and create – growing minds and filling them with endless possibilities.
