Contemporary Arts Memphis Calling for Student Artist Applications for Summer Fellowship Program

MEMPHIS, Tenn., February 22, 2022 – Contemporary Arts Memphis, the region’s first organization focused on identifying and nurturing the next generation of visual artists, announced today it is accepting applications for its inaugural Summer Fellowship Program for students attending high school in the greater Memphis area. Student artists can learn more and apply online using the CAM website at https://www.camsummer.org/apply. Contemporary Arts Memphis (CAM), the flagship program of The Blue Room Foundation, is a 501I3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify and empower under-resourced student artists.

“The artist I am today has everything to do with Memphis, being born and raised here. This program is about reaching back to help that next generation of artists go further,” said Derek Fordjour, CAM Founder, native Memphian, and New York based artist.

The CAM Summer Fellowship Program is designed to help young artists understand the art world, improve art-making skills and expose them to successful models. The Fellowship is a no-cost four-week program open to high school students entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in Memphis and the surrounding areas.

The competitive application process prioritizes student artwork and finalists will receive interviews. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 18, 2022. Applicants can also expect a virtual interview with the CAM selection panel where they will be asked about their current artistic work and goals for the future.

This year’s Summer Fellowship Program will begin Monday, June 6 and conclude Friday, July 1. The first three weeks of the program will be an on-site sleep-away camp experience at For the Kingdom in North Memphis. Fellows can expect teacher-led learning opportunities, specialized workshops from art industry professionals, independent studio time, and peer-focused group discussions. For the fourth week, CAM will visit New York City where they will visit cultural institutions, art galleries, and complete the program. Anyone interested in applying or learning more about CAM’s Summer Fellowship Program can do so online at https://www.camsummer.org/apply.
