Jack’s Old South Named Grand Champion of the 2016 Memphis in May
World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest
Final Results of the 2016 Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Contest Announced
MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 14, 2015 – Two hundred thirty-five barbecue competitors from 22 states and five foreign countries met on the banks of the Mississippi River this weekend to see who had the best barbecue on the planet. Tonight, Jack’s Old South barbecue team from Unadilla, Georgia, was crowned Grand Champion of America’s most prestigious barbecue cooking competition, the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (WCBCC).
This is the fourth Grand Champion title for Jack’s Old South at the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, having won in 2001, 2004, 2007 and now in 2016. The only other team to win four WCBCC contests is Big Bob Gibson.
"This was my 20th anniversary at Memphis in May and to win Grand Champion four times, well I couldn’t be happier! Both my brother and my son weren’t with me the first three times, so this win is special,” said Myron Mixon from Jack’s Old South. “This whole team is new and they are all really excited."
When asked about tying Big Bob Gibson’s record of four Grand Championships Mixon said, "We’re coming back to win it again next year!"
Jack’s Old South won the Whole Hog Division and was named Grand Champion of the Memphis in May World Barbecue Cooking Contest taking home $30,500 in prize money.
“It is an amazing accomplishment to win Grand Champion four times, we couldn’t be happier for Jack’s Old South,” said Jim Holt, president and CEO of Memphis in May International Festival. “To be named Grand Champion of the most prestigious barbecue cooking contest in the world even once is a huge accomplishment. Myron Mixon has risen to a level very few will ever experience.”
The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest started in 1978 in a parking lot with a few dozen teams and their grills. The contest has grown to now occupy, and fill to capacity, 25-acre Tom Lee Park on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.
