Man Up Signing Day Ceremony and Kick-Off Celebrates Placing 100+ Black Teachers In Memphis Schools
Memphis, Tenn., August 16, 2022 – Man Up Teacher Fellowship, the non-profit organization dedicated to placing high-quality male teachers of color into schools, will hold a kick-off signing day ceremony to celebrate the milestone of reaching 100+ Black male teachers in the organization’s fellowship. The celebration will be held at Loflin Yard from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, and will welcome the fifth class in the program’s history to surpass 100 fellows placed in schools across Memphis and the Mid-South since forming in 2018. Anyone interested in learning more about Man Up Teacher Fellowship and its mission is invited to attend the celebration and can RSVP here: http://evite.me/apbk95ywW7.
“I’m excited to announce Man Up will have reached the incredible milestone of placing more than 100 men of color into teaching positions across Memphis in just three years since our formation in 2018,” said Dr. Patrick Washington, Founder and CEO of Man Up Teacher Fellowship. “This is a celebration of our commitment to creating a talent pipeline of men of color in education and bringing more diversity and role models to the classroom.”
According to the U.S. Department of Education, less than 2% of teachers are men of color. Man Up Teacher Fellowship aims to increase that number in its partner schools by five percent over the next five years. Man Up recently expanded its work to Nashville and the middle Tennessee area holding an informational event in April to give men of color an opportunity to network and learn more about the Man Up Teacher Fellowship.
The signing ceremony for the fifth class represents the fellows signing their five-year commitment to the program, which schools they will be teaching in, and celebrating with colleagues, friends, and family.
The organization has teamed up with the University of Memphis, Mississippi State University, Christian Brothers University, Teacher Ready, and RELAY Graduate School of Education to create a rigorous selection process that recruits and trains impactful men of color to be teachers. The fellows get access to scholarships, job training, job placement, career coaching, and can go on to earn their Master of Arts in Teaching at no cost to them.
Man Up Teacher Fellowship offers programs for undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals that want to make a career change to teaching.
