| MEMPHIS, Tenn., August 29, 2019 – Volunteers and donations are needed to support 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance on Wednesday, September 11, to honor and recognize Memphis Police Officers, Memphis Firefighters, Emergency Medical Teams and Military. The day of service will include large-scale service projects across the county and a county-wide recognition event. The following organizations are involved in the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance – Volunteer Memphis, Leadership Memphis, Indian Community of Greater Memphis, Memphis City Council, City of Memphis Fire Department and Police Department, City of Memphis Parks & Recreation Division, City of Memphis Military ERG, Shelby County Parks and Ground Maintenance Department, Shelby County Sheriff Office, Shelby County Fire Department, Memphis VA Medical Center, Memphis Redbirds, Southern College of Optometry, Volunteer Memphis Corporate Volunteer Council and Steering Council, Memphis City Beautiful, Memphis Restaurant Association, and Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services. “We are humbled and honored to work with great service partners and the Mid-South community as we all come together to support our first responders on Wednesday, September 11 with meal stops throughout Shelby County, military park clean-ups, and a special recognition event with a presentation of plaques at City Hall,” said Andrea Hill, Director of Volunteer Memphis. “Whether it’s through volunteering or an in-kind donation we welcome everyone to participate in making this day special.”
2019 marks the 18th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. In 2018, Volunteer Memphis mobilized more than 300 volunteers to serve meals to more than 480 first responders and clean-up area parks. This year, the goal is to serve over 500 first responders through the support of our community partners, restaurants, caterers, and volunteer groups.
9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Schedule:
- Recognition event with a presentation of plaques at City Hall-Council Chambers at 8:00 a.m.
- Meal Stops throughout the City between 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

In 2009 according to the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS), Congress designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law and charged the CNCS with helping to support this effort across the country. Since September 11, 2001, millions of Americans have come together through volunteer service with a common purpose to honor first responders and those that fell victim to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001and commemorate their bravery and heroism as well as the tragic loss of life.
