MEMPHIS, Tenn., December 9, 2022 – The National Credit Union Association (CUNA) recently awarded Southern Security with the 2nd place Desjardins Financial Literacy Award and an honorable mention Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award. Awarded by the National Award Committee for CUNA, these awards shine a light on the exciting and inspiring ways that the people helping people philosophy is used to advance communities.

“We are grateful to have been recognized nationally by our peers with these two awards for our work in the community,” said Dawn Graeter, President and CEO of Southern Security. “Our team works hard to invest in our communities through exceptional customer service, philanthropy and volunteerism, so it is an honor to be recognized for our commitment.”

The Desjardins Financial literacy award is a Financial Education Award program that recognizes leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy for members and nonmembers of all ages. The award, named after credit union pioneer Alphonse Desjardins, emphasizes the movement’s longtime commitment to financial education. Southern Security offers financial literacy resources, education, and accounts to members of all ages as part of its mission to help its members financially. Southern Security works with local schools to educate young people about financial best practices and offers free member savings accounts to youth.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award is presented to encourage and honor credit unions and chapter involvement in community projects and activities. Dora Maxwell, whom this award is named after, was a community activist who committed her life to credit union development, her community and serving the underserved. Southern Security supports many nonprofits, community resources, and community partners in the Mid-South through philanthropic efforts, employee volunteerism, and partnerships.
