Volunteers Needed to Honor Mid-South First Responders through Service Projects and City-Wide Recognition Event Tuesday, September 11

MEMPHIS, Tenn., August 21, 2018 – Volunteer Memphis, Leadership Memphis, Volunteer Tennessee, City of Memphis AmeriCorps VISTA program, Senior Corps, Memphis City Beautiful, the United Way of the Mid-South, the City of Memphis Parks & Neighborhoods Division are seeking volunteers as they join together to support Memphis Police Officers, Memphis Firefighters, Emergency Medical Teams and Military on Tuesday, September 11 with two large scale service projects, and a recognition event for the entire city of Memphis. “We are humbled and honored to work with great service partners and the Mid-South community as we all come together to support our first responders on Tuesday, September 11 with meal stops at six city of Memphis community centers, five Military park clean-ups, and a special recognition event with presentation of plaques at City Hall,” said David Williams, President/CEO of Leadership Memphis. “Whether it’s through volunteering or an in-kind donation we welcome everyone to participate to make this day special.”

Volunteer Memphis, an action initiative of Leadership Memphis, is at the heart of volunteering in the Mid-South. Volunteer Memphis helps individuals, families, corporate teams and community groups strengthen Memphis and the Mid-South through service at more than 300 nonprofit organizations and schools. Volunteer Memphis is also an affiliate of the Hands On Network, an association of 250 volunteer service organizations across 16 countries.

9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Schedule:

a.       Meal Stops at Six City of Memphis Community Centers between 11:30 a.m.
to 6:00 p.m.

b.       Five Military Park Clean-ups between 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

c.       One Recognition event with presentation of plaques at City Hall, time is 8:00 a.m.

In 2009 according to the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS), Congress designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law, and charged the CNCS with helping to support this effort across the country. Since September 11, 2001, millions of Americans have come together with a common purpose to honor 9/11 and commemorate the tragedy through volunteer service.
